It prevents the introduction and spread of non-autochthonous (non-native) animal and plant pests across borders.
Moisture Reduction
The process reduces the moisture content in the wood, which helps prevent rotting, cracking, and other degradation, increasing the pallet's lifespan.
Compliance with Regulations
Heat treatment is required under the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15 (ISPM 15), which governs the use of wood packaging material in international trade.
Chemical-Free Solution
It is a chemical-free method of pest elimination, making the pallets safer and more environmentally friendly than fumigation with chemicals like methyl bromide.
The Heat Treatment Process
In the Kiln
Wooden pallets are placed in specialized kilns or ovens.
Heating the Wood
The wood is heated using controlled dry heat.
Achieving Target Temperature
The wood's core temperature must reach a minimum of 56°C (133°F).
Sustaining the Temperature
This temperature must be maintained for at least 30 continuous minutes throughout the entire piece of wood, ensuring that all parts of the core are treated.
Verification
After treatment, the pallet is marked with the IPPC stamp, which includes the HT (Heat Treated) code, a country code, and the treatment provider's registration number, certifying its compliance.
